Can Themba, adapted for the stage by Barney Simon and Mothobi Mutloatse
Created as a companion piece to the award-winning main-stage production by Peter Brook and Marie-Hélène Estienne, this Young Vic Young People’s Production saw 16 young people drawn from the Young Vic’s local community work with an award-winning professional team — including Linbury Prize-winner Jean Chan — to create their own response to Can Themba’s apartheid fable. In the dusty heat of a 1950s South African township, a young worker returns home to find his wife in bed with her lover. The lover escapes, leaving behind his suit. In revenge, the husband instructs his wife to treat the suit as an honoured guest. But how long can she endure this cruel and pitiless punishment?
